Synopsis
Levi's job is to protect his human until it's their time to go. That's what a Guard does. He's done it for years on end, and he'll spend his eternity doing the same, mundane thing, following the same, mundane rules. ...Watch from afar. ...Never share your name. ...And above all, never touch a human. What Levi doesn't know is that his newest human to protect, Hannah, just might be the catalyst to tipping the scales between good and evil, and he will be forced to decide which side he belongs to. Which friends will he side with, and who will he ultimately protect: his human, or the delicate balance that hangs on stopping the heartbeat of the person he has sworn to protect? And, when you're already condemned, what's there to lose by breaking the rules?
Something strange happened to me about this book. I was just starting out, and… I wasn’t happy, but I held back the urge to check the reviews in Goodreads and see if people were having a smiliar reaction because I was barely tolerating the book as it was because I wanted to knon if Levi got any sort of punishment because of breaking the rules.
When I rate a book two or one star, I usually don’t hate them, I just wish the concept had been written another way, so that I could’ve enjoyed it. Unfortunately, life is life.
To simplify things, I’m going to make this review much more organized than I’m used to.
The Good:
-It was well paced
-Being in Levi’s head wasn’t boring
-The author didn’t try for Levi’s thoughts to be sexual in order to appear as a guy
The Bad:
-It was very easy to notice it wsn’t a polished work
-The characters were just scratching the surface of their potential, and at times, they were inconsistent.
Levi: The hero, wasn’t very heroic. In action scenes, he wasn’t quick to react. One would think that after decades of fighting evil, he’d be more badass.
Hannah: She was whiny and borderline silly. The girl couldn’t make up her mind abbout what she wanted. I couldn’t see any personality at all.
Ethan and Angie, were, in my opinion the only characters whose story seemed to be worth telling.
-The romance in this book didn’t convince me. I didn’t even see it happening, and I don’t say this in the good way. Believe me, one second, Levi was going on and on about how they shouldn’t touch their Calls(Their assigned humans), or talk to them, or think about them too much. And then radomly, he breaks all these rules because he thinks Hannah is different. Say what? How exactly do you know this, Levi? If for the three years you’ve been guarding her, you’ve felt nothing about this girl and don’t know her at all?
-Which leads me to, he breaks all these rules, but then… gets rewarded for it? It just didn’t make sense. Or at least, the lack of clear consequences for HIM doesn’t make sense.
-Ethan and Levi like to banter back and forth. I like Ethan’s sacastic comebacks, but sometimes, these dialogues felt like they were there just for the sake of filling space, or to force me to believe that yes, indeed Ethan is cool and has a sarcastic personality.
As you can see, for me, the bad outweighed the good. When I finished this book, I allowed myself to look at the ratings an reviews, now that there was no harm and no danger of being swayed by them. I discovered most were five and four stars. o.o. I don’t know what that makes me, but I can’t say I feel the same.
