It all started about two or three weeks ago. Who really knows? I’ve been living in sort of a vaccuum since I discovered this writer human being. Anyways, I spotted this tweet on my timeline:
If you’re looking for an amazing fantasy world with the most earth-shattering romance you’ve ever seen, for the love of god read this.

And I was like, “Okay, I’ll bite”, and almost on a whim, and with one click 😉 I bought The Winter King on my Kindle app.
Little did I know, that that would be the beginning of the end.
Because the torture didn’t stop with The Winter King, oh no, it spread into the span of six other books that are part of another series, The Tairen Soul series. At the moment of this post being written, I’m at the last one, and I’m not ready people, I’m not ready.
So Why? Why did I love them so much?
It never gets boring aka being a plain ol’ awesome writer
In both cases, with TWK, and the Tairen Soul series, there’s never a dull moment, there’s always something that makes you want to keep reading, something going on, as subtle as it may be. This should be a no brainer, but how many times have we loved a book but also grudgingly recognized some parts you had to skip over? Ah… yes, I told you so. But here there’s none of that. C.L. Wilson clearly is some kind of goddess. Like with an orchestra, she masterfully harmonizes every aspect of her stories in such a way everything gets taken into account, at the right moment.
Special POVs aka being the evil genius
This is something that caught my attention in Tairen Soul. We have POVs from Ellie, the MC; and also Rain, the other lovely peanut MC (in fact, we start with his POV). But, we also have sporadic POVs from a considerable range of minor characters, and yes, this incluudes the baddies!
You would think also being in the head of the bad guys would kind of spoil the mystery of the evilness. But let me put your doubts to rest. No, this is actually the most awesome and torturous thing! By carefully choosing whose POVs she shows us, and what to show us, C.L. Wilson does an spectacular job of playing with the readers’ emotions. Becuase it’s precisely that knowing exactly what’s happening while our heroes don’t yet what it’s going to drive you insane (IN THE GOOD WAY!).
And no, it isn’t because our heroes are stupid and can’t figure it out. They just don’t have all the clues yet! And you start rooting for them, and praying they find the way to even the game NOWS.
This way of telling the story gave such a broader view of the entire conflict and I think much of the excitement would be gone if I didn’t have the extra insight into the minds of all these other characters. Like with Melina Marchetta’s Lumatere Chronicles, that uses a similar technique, the story isn’t just about Ellie and Rain, the same way The Lumatere Chronicles isn’t just about Finnikin, or Froi, or Quintana or Isaboe.
And if you must know, I’m sure this is the author when she realized what an evil genius she was.
The worldbuilding aka Being a goddess
There is painstakingly crafting a world from the ground up and thinking about geography, religion, traditions, and all that jazz. That’s worldbuilding.
And then there is this shit.
I’m just going to tell you, now I speak to my sister in broken Feyan for funsies. XD
Without going Tolkien on us, Wilson did a fine job with the language. She’s consistent throughout the books and doesn’t keep adding tons of nonsensical words we’re not even going to remember. She first introduces us to a few key phrases, and sticks with them until they are burned into your brain, and then with each book, reinforces them and adds a few other words here and there. And that’s it. It feels as real as the electronic device you’re touching right now 😉
But of course, building a world is more than just language. There’s a whole culture and moral principles attached to each race/nationality in these stories. She brings them all to life. She plays with their differences and pits them against each other, spreading seeds of conflict and potential awesomeness EVERYWHEREE.

I could probably go on and on about how this wonderful author has changed my life and my expectations of books, but fear not, you’ll be hearing more about it because I won’t shut up about these books until C.L. Wilson rules the world :3

You should read any C.L. Wilson book if

I LOVE YOUR REVIEW SO MUCH!!!
C.L. Wilson is just amazing. Now you can see why everything else just pales in comparison. After reading her books, it’s like I’ve found the perfect author and suddenly everything that I used to think was perfect isn’t, because it’s just not as good as Wilson’s.
Ashley recently posted this awesome thing…Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – The Good and the Bad

THANKS! I guess that’s the price to pay for perfection. After reading a couple of books I have pending, I’m SO rereading The Winter King!
