Synopsis
A wedding. A trip to Spain. The most infuriating man. And three days of pretending. Or in other words, a plan that will never work.
Catalina Martín, finally, not single. Her family is happy to announce that she will bring her American boyfriend to her sister’s wedding. Everyone is invited to come and witness the most magical event of the year.
That would certainly be tomorrow’s headline in the local newspaper of the small Spanish town I came from. Or the epitaph on my tombstone, seeing the turn my life had taken in the span of a phone call.
Four weeks wasn’t a lot of time to find someone willing to cross the Atlantic–from NYC and all the way to Spain–for a wedding. Let alone, someone eager to play along my charade. But that didn’t mean I was desperate enough to bring the 6’4 blue eyed pain in my ass standing before me.
Aaron Blackford. The man whose main occupation was making my blood boil had just offered himself to be my date. Right after inserting his nose in my business, calling me delusional, and calling himself my best option. See? Outrageous. Aggravating. Blood boiling. And much to my total despair, also right. Which left me with a surly and extra large dilemma in my hands. Was it worth the suffering to bring my colleague and bane of my existence as my fake boyfriend to my sister’s wedding? Or was I better off coming clean and facing the consequences of my panic induced lie?
Like my abuela would say, que dios nos pille confesados.
I still have the whole year ahead of me, but something tells me this is definitely one of my favorite romance books this year. It HAS TO BE.
The author truly picked some of the best the romance genre has to offer and multiplied it by ten, making it so awesome, I can’t even.
I truly could talk about this story for hours, but I’m bringing this down to a few main highlights that made this such an enjoyable read.
The enemies to allies
TLD drops up right into the action, which is introducing the less than amicable relationship between Catalina and Aaron. He volunteers to be her fake date to her sister’s wedding and she keeps saying no.
Because surely he can’t be serious, and if he is, then he’s up to something. Because Aaron Blackford doesn’t like her.
It’s funny because most of the animosity comes from Lina’s side. Aaron is more cold than anything, and that is great, because he’s not really an asshole.
So Aaron just tries to get close to Lina is the way that makes the most sense to him at that time, and eventually, she accepts because she really has no other choice.
The office romance
The story itself is set in Spain rather than at the office, even if it starts and ends there. Still, there’s a lot to unpack about this trope in The Spanish Love Deception.
The office situation is quite important because it isn’t just another setting. It’s an important part of the plot that I really appreciated. It touches on power dynamics, and the stereotypes that women face in men-dominated fields.
So, that was definitely a plus.
The fake dating
Aaron is the best at fake dating. He’s sweet and cool with Lina’s family, he appropitely saves her from awkward situations, and even one ups Lina’s ex with his sexy bod.
He’s so good at the fake dating, it takes Lina a bit to catch up and realize Aaron might not be faking anything after all.
It’s all hilariously, and deliciously sweet.
And everything in between
This might be really the best about this book, and it’s all the little details, the stares, the gestures. Like I died every time Aaron gave her something to eat because he knew she would appreciate it. Like trying out her favorite coffee shop because he heard her mention it to her friend.
Le sigh.
You really don’t want to miss this one, friends!
