Synopsis
Eighteen-year-old Kricket Hollowell was looking for her place in the world when she discovered that the universe was bigger—and more dangerous—than she had ever dreamed. Now, whisked across space to the planet Ethar, Kricket learns that her genetic ability to see the future makes her a sought-after commodity…and the catalyst for war between her star-crossed parents’ clans. According to Alameedan prophecy, one house will rise to power and the other will be completely wiped out, and Kricket’s precognition is believed to be the weapon that will tip the scales.
A target of both the Rafe and the Alameeda houses, Kricket finds protection—and a home—in the arms of Trey, her Etharian bodyguard-turned-boyfriend. But her visions of what’s to come disturb her deeply, especially since she must discover whether the gift of foresight will allow her to rewrite the future, or if her fate is as immovable as the stars.
I was very happy that there were very few mentions of Kricket’s luck in the physical department. I liked how the story mostly focused on her trying to cope with Kyon’s madness.
And just for the record. THAT DUDE IS SO CRAZY. But that’s part of why this story holds so much appeal to me. Him, being the main antagonist is a pretty cool one. He has this sick thought that he owns Kricket. You see, all priestesses like her, are given off to what equals to a ‘lord’ or something. That’s the way of the Alameeda, the people she’s half part of. So, this guy Kyon thinks that because she’s supposedly meant to be with him he’ll have to train her to obey him and not to question him. o.o 50 shades anyone?
We don’t see much of Trey and Kricket being together in the beginning, but once they leave all the fighting behind and are able to get to a realtively safe place, the bam-baam begins. I guess those two had a lot of supressed… urges.
On the not so brigher side, something weird happened that I’m still not sure if I liked or not. Normally, the tension in a story escalates into the climax, yes? But with Sea of Stars, it started with the tension already on the roof and then slowly began to recede. However, since Kricket remained badass the whole time, I couldn’t really get mad XD.
*Worldbuilding*
Since this story doesn’t take place in our ‘normal’ world, I decided to add this little tidbit here. Even though a lot has been done to cover this aspect of the story, I still had a hard time imagining the setting. The story mainly takes place in a floating ship, but in the midst of all the action, the descriptions didn’t help a lot with what my brain was able to conjure.
