Synopsis
It’s been ten years since Princess Aurora’s mother, the Sleeping Beauty, sacrificed her life to give her daughter her magical powers. Aurora knows that magic is never free. The price for hers is that she will never know romantic love. Prince Niklaas is living on borrowed time. Unless he is able to convince a princess to marry him before his eighteenth birthday, he will meet the same terrible fate as his ten older brothers. When Niklaas and Aurora meet under unusual circumstances, they must race to prevent the fulfillment of an ogre prophecy foretelling the end of human life. But will they be able to break their curses?
I wouldn’t call this exactly a fairy tale retelling, but I honestly don’t care o.o. Princess of Thorns has the same beautiful writing as Of Beast and Beauty, and shares its brilliant pacing and skill for telling a story within the story.
Aurora, is Rose’s daughter aka, The Sleeping Beauty. Disguised as a boy, she’s on a quest to rescue her little brother, Jor.
I won’t lie to you, at first both Aurora and Niklaas got on my nerves. But soon, their banter turned entertaining. I must admit this book isn’t as soul-reaching as Of Beast and Beauty, but it does succeed at delivering a nice story.
The dynamics between the couple are endearing and despite it being fantasy, very human. And even the bits told from the baddie’s point of view are quite intriguing.
I liked how when the time to exchange words of love and fluffy stuff came, it didn’t feel forced, or made me roll my eyes. The characters spoke from the heart and that warmed mine to no end.
I’ll just sit tight here waiting for another of Stacey Jay’s awesome books.
[Edit: I wrote this before all the drama from Stacey Jay’s indefinite withdrawal from the YA community. I don’t know if she’ll ever read this review, but I feel good knowing it’s out there.]
