Q&A
1. How do you think your readers will empathize with your characters in Burned Gasoline?
I do hope they’ll see behind the tough shell of the male character Jefferson. He might sound all grumpy, pissed off, and bitter, but I hope the reader will identify with the reason behind it. When it comes to the main female character, who’s like a fish out of water, I think it would be hard not to have compassion for a single mother, leaving a cheating husband and her old life behind for something brand new and foreign.
2. What did you struggle the most while writing this story?
Hmm… as usual it’s about finding enough time to write. Uninterrupted time, that is. When no one is home, the house is quiet, and I can unplug the phone from the wall. I rarely find the actual writing process difficult, it sort of just flows. Sometimes I have no idea what will actually happen next in a story but find that the more I write the more alternatives I have for the story. Each of my stories could easily have two or three different endings, but I usually have to stop and decide which one fits the best. Still, my mind always asks me, “but what if? What if? What if?” So you see, one story could be divided up into many different ones.
3. Can you describe the female protagonist, Raylyn in four words?
Naïve, stubborn, funny (when drunk), family oriented. (kind of four words…)
4. Do you listen to music while you write, or to get inspired for writing? If so, which songs do you like the most?
My only time to write is really when everyone has gone to bed at night. So, between 8-ish to 10:30-ish I write and read, and being a mom to a very chatty toddler I usually turn off the regular channels and turn on the radio music channel on the TV instead, to instrumental soundscapes. I find it hard to hear lyrics from songs, or people talking, when I try to write my own sentences. I need smooth sounds to make my brain flow and I don’t want to be interrupted by other words around me.
5. Do you write every day?
I do write every day. Even if I’m dead tired, I usually write something. Either on my laptop while sitting on the couch half asleep, or jotting down random phrases and words I will use in the future in my almost overflowing notebook. If I don’t have a paper handy during the day, because my book ideas can fly by very randomly, I use the notepad on my cell phone and record the idea or sentences by talking into it while out walking, or shopping. Even peeking out with my head from the shower sometimes, grabbing the phone nearby to record what I came up with so I won’t forget. Because that idea might be gone a second later.
6. One more question, are you a cat lady, or more of the man’s best friend kind?
Oh, that’s hard. Some people might find this question the easiest one and quickly shoot out an answer. Me, on the other hand… I actually grew up owning several birds, rabbits, even mice. Later I had a beautiful shiny black Labrador Retriever, as well as a chocolate brown Doberman, but since I met my husband we’ve adopted three shelter cats, two birds (again), and we own two aquariums with several fish. As you can see, I’m all over the place. Whoever needs a home can find it here with us. That’s our family philosophy I think.
7. What are you planning on writing next?
My first novel, Beast of Venery, was a autobiographical novel based on a true story, while my new novel Burned Gasoline (out Feb. 20th 2015) is part of a new series containing four books called “A Gass County Novel.” The second book in the series comes out in August with the title “Once Upon A Killing.” The series tells the life stories of four guys who have been friends since high school but are now all grown up and in their mid thirties. Because men in the +35 zone are so wonderfully hot, I couldn’t stop myself: They have character, life experience, and can grow beards… do I need to say more? Well, they all live in the same small town in Gass County, which means their lives are going to intertwine throughout the books. In Burned Gasoline we meet car mechanic Jefferson, then the reader will be introduced to Paramedic Wayne (who might meet his match and fight for his life), Sheriff Brody (perhaps breaking the law himself), and last but not least Rescue worker Bryce (who might be messing around with someone’s sister, stirring up some problems). The book genre is romantic suspense, as these naughty men lead the most interesting lives.
Thank you so much for this great opportunity, I hope to hear your comments about the books very soon.
