Synopsis
Jack and I, we did everything backward. The day he lured me into his office-which was also the first day we met-he proposed. You'd think a guy who looked like him-a bit cold maybe, but still striking and very unattainable-would only ask the love of his life to marry him, right? You'd think he must be madly in love.
Nope. It was me he asked. A complete stranger who had never even heard of him. A stranger who had been dumped by her fiancé only weeks before. You'd think I'd laugh in his face, call him insane-and a few other names-then walk away as quickly as possible. Well…I did all those things except the walking away part.
It took him only minutes to talk me into a business deal…erm, I mean marriage, and only days for us to officially tie the knot. Happiest day of my life. Magical. Pop the champagne… Not. It was the worst day. Jack Hawthorne was nothing like what I'd imagined for myself.I blamed him for my lapse in judgment. I blamed his eyes, the ocean blue eyes that looked straight into mine unapologetically, and that frown on his face I had no idea I would become so fascinated with in time.
It wasn't long after he said I was the biggest mistake of his life that things started to change. No, he still didn't talk much, but anyone can string a few words together. His actions spoke the loudest to me. And day after day my heart started to get a mind of its own.
One second he was no one. The next he became everything. One second he was unattainable. The next he seemed to be completely mine. One second I thought we were in love. The next it was still nothing but a lie.
After all, I was Rose and he was Jack. We were doomed from the very beginning with those names. Did you expect anything else?
Before you do anything else: You need to know that this book is so, so lovely.
And let’s get another thing out of the way,
It’s kind of silly
The entire thing depends on Rose being desperate enough to agree to marry Jack so that it’s a win-win situation. And from the get go you’re like, OKAAAY, I’ll bite. It makes a little more sense later, but still at first you’re wondering if there really wasn’t any other way to solve her problem without her having to agree to marry a virtual stranger.
But, here’s where we just roll with it and keep turning those pages to get to the RosexJack goodness.
The only reason you need to read this book: You fall in love right along with the characters
On Jack
Jack is my favorite kind of male character in a romance book. The quiet, brooding type that is clearly all soft inside. I love it that the story actually shows how much he cares about Rose. And it’s his attitude in different situations that make you fall for him as well. You believe someone would like him because the author actually takes the time to show him as a slightly misguided, stern, but sweet cinammon roll of a man.
On Rose
Her coffee shop ‘Around the Corner’ is one of the main reasons I love her. She dreamed of opening her own business and baking for people and having lots of happy customers. And she damn well was going to achieve her dream, even if she has to marry the most confusing man ever. Her interactions with Jack are golden. She’s relentless in her pursuit of getting a smile out of him, and she’s total mush for him, specially when he rolls up his sleeves, or does anything nice for her, going above and beyond common courtesy.
On the big secret (no spoilers, I promise)
It all might seem perfect, but there is conflict here. But I feel like in spite of the problem, the responsible party paid their dues and really groveled. It’d have bothered me if it’d been resolved too easily. Maybe you’ll feel differently, so heads up about it.
A story told in a way I rarely see
On their own, the elements of this story are pretty basic. There’s nothing that is out of this world. But it’s that very simplicity that makes it beautiful. It’s in the little things of how they grow to understand each other and care for each other’s wellbeing.
And that ending? Omg, sweetest thing ever.
