I’m sure I can’t be the only one who has ever felt torn between reading a book that has a sequel or waiting until all the books are out. When it comes to those, for me it’s very simple.
I can’t help but read the first one.
Really, I don’t know if it’s a new kind of evil masochism but I never can’t seem to keep from reading a book if the opportunity presents itself, even if the next one doesn’t come out in until 1+ year. I know, I know, I may just be torturing myself.
Of course, in most cases the result is: Utter emotional pain.
1. OMG OMG OMG OMG
This amazing phase only lasts (for me) about three seconds to a minute.
2. Well, Damn
Yep. The happiness has gone poof and now it’s time to mourn that awesome story.
But hey! There’s a sequel!
3. There’s a Reason to Live
Let’s check Goodreads for the date!
4. Just Die Now
5. Wait and Hope to Survive
6. Rinse and Repeat
I wish, I wish with all my heart I was strong enough to wait, but I’m a cover whore, and also a mood reader, which equals: A voice in my head that won’t stop nagging me until I read X book.
So I really envy those who can wait patiently. YOU GUYS, HOW DO YOU DO IT?

I used to do that…go ahead and read the first book, but then I found that when the sequel finally came out, I didn’t remember a thing about the first book and had to reread it. I started waiting until at least two were out, that way the story was much further sunk into my brain. It’s harder for me to forget two books. 🙂

I used to be better about waiting for all the books in a series to come out. It’s so awesome to be able to read them all at once! But in the past couple of years, since I’ve been blogging, I usually can’t handle waiting anymore. I read all of these amazing reviews, and I just have to read the book NOW! The worst thing for me is when the anticipation actually wears off and then I find myself not even that excited for future books anymore.

That happens to me to! There’s been many occasions in which I’ve been crazy for a book at first but when I finally get it (after months or even a year or so), it’s not quite the same.

I got into this pickle with Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. I took me YEARS to finish it because 1) the books are ridiculously long and 2) I didn’t realize that all the books weren’t published until I’d already gotten like 5 books into the series.
If I had to do it all over again, I’d still start the series. I don’t often have to deal with this problem, but I think I’d go ahead and read the first book.

Yes! I went through something similar when I read Angelfall, by Susan Ee. In her website it said there’d be 5 BOOKS and was like oh well. But my enthusiasm began to fade when more than a year went by without clear date for the 2nd one. The wait was excruciating. But now she’ll be releasing the third and apparently, last. It’s a relief, but I feel your pain.

Typically, if I’m “waiting” to read a series, it’s because I either haven’t heard of it yet or don’t really care about reading it. In the first case, cool! I just found a new series I can binge read. In the second…yeah, probably doesn’t matter. If I haven’t picked it up yet, unless a close friend really pushes it, I’m probably not going to.
As for waiting in between series books, I guess I just quickly move on to the next book on my TBR list so I don’t have time to over think or agonize. 🙂

As much as I hate cliffhangers, I can’t wait until my favorite authors finish a series and must read them immediately! If I don’t notice a series until it’s already started, I can usually hold off and read them all at once. But honestly? I’m pretty impatient and rarely wait.

Join the club. XD We’re here for you sister. Recently there’s been a lot of TBR list book adding and all of them new so I’m fried here! The painstaking wait after each book begins.

Great list!
I struggle with this too. I have no self control when it comes to shiny new books, I cannot help but read it as soon as I can. Most of the time, the next book does not come out until the next year.
One of the things that reading has taught me is to be patient, even when I just want to storm into an author’s house and demand their book now.
Since I cannot do that, I usually distract myself with another book or Netflix. I also like to rant to my other bookish friends about the book.

Hahaha Netflix definetely helps. We should start a group for us poor people who weep for sequels.

I don’t think I could wait until all the books come out. That’s just too long! I’ll read the series as it progresses; it’s better than ultimately forgetting about it because I’m waiting for 3+ years for all the books to come out.

Same here. I’d also either die of anticipation or completely forget about wanting to read them all! Although I know of people who really don’t like being left in the limbo between two books and steer clear of in progress series.
