Samara Cavanaugh has grown up in a world filled with magic users. She’s used to bizarre and peculiar. But when a stranger checks in at The Bella Luna, the bed and breakfast her family owns, the strange occurrences in Granite Falls escalate.
Many people are leery of Levi, their new guest. He claims to be in town doing research but Samara’s friends aren’t so sure that his claim is as innocuous as it appears to be. When two of her classmates disappear, her friends seem convinced Levi had a hand in it.
Those closest to her have been keeping secrets from her. Those secrets put everyone close to her in danger.
Suddenly, her unrequited crush on her best friend, Tristan becomes the least of her troubles.

Creating a believable, yet fantasy filled world
I have always had a love for fantasy, paranormal, and horror stories. I discovered Stephen King when I was in the 6th grade. I spent many nights curled up on the top bunk of my bunk bed reading his books with a flashlight. I’d hide under the covers so as not to alert my mom to what I was reading and also so that I wouldn’t awaken my much younger sister.
Now that I’m (much) older, I still retain my adoration for these fantasy filled books. The stories I love the most are those that truly pull you into an all-encompassing, completely new world. I think that these types of stories have the ability to help you lose yourself in a book in a way that other types of literature cannot.
Three series that I believe do this flawlessly are:
The Beautiful Creatures series by Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia
The Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo
The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clair
These authors use existing mythology and lore as a foundation for their work. I believe that factor is crucial. It often allows a reader to connect to a thread of familiarity. It is also a wonderful tool for finding a starting point for your writing. From there, as long as the author can skillfully twist the tale into something that remains within the realms of believability, almost anything can happen. An author just needs to be careful to remain within the confines of boundaries they have set.
