I can’t believe the year is almost over! It feels like only yesterday that it was last year Christmas’. Well, actually, it was a year ago, but hey, time flies!
I like to read, whether it’s day, or night; winter, or summer. But we all know there are certain reads that are specially more enjoyable during certain times of the year!
So, for your bookish delight, here are some books that you might want to cuddle up with this week 🙂
Winterspell, by Claire Legrand
The clock chimes midnight, a curse breaks, and a girl meets a prince…but what follows is not all sweetness and sugarplums.
New York City, 1899. Clara Stole, the mayor’s ever-proper daughter, leads a double life. Since her mother’s murder, she has secretly trained in self-defense with the mysterious Drosselmeyer.
Then, on Christmas Eve, disaster strikes.
Her home is destroyed, her father abducted—by beings distinctly not human. To find him, Clara journeys to the war-ravaged land of Cane. Her only companion is the dethroned prince Nicholas, bound by a wicked curse. If they’re to survive, Clara has no choice but to trust him, but his haunted eyes burn with secrets—and a need she can’t define. With the dangerous, seductive faery queen Anise hunting them, Clara soon realizes she won’t leave Cane unscathed—if she leaves at all.
Inspired by The Nutcracker, Winterspell is a dark, timeless fairy tale about love and war, longing and loneliness, and a girl who must learn to live without fear.
This one I actually read last year since I bought the kindle version exactly for Christmas. I never reviewed it on here, but you must know I don’t regret any penny. I got my Nutcracker story, plus an amazing heroine that has to go through A LOT of troubles in this dark Cane land that honestly gave me the chills! It was… different.
The Iron King, by Julie Kagawa
Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.
Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.
When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she’s known is about to change.
But she could never have guessed the truth – that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil, no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.
If you thought I’ve gushed enough about these books, then you thought wrong! Seriously, though. Nothing better than reading about a certain winter prince with a mug of hot chocolate.
Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow, by Jessica Day George
Blessed—or cursed—with an ability to understand animals, the Lass (as she’s known to her family) has always been an oddball. And when an isbjorn (polar bear) seeks her out, and promises that her family will become rich if only the Lass will accompany him to his castle, she doesn’t hesitate. But the bear is not what he seems, nor is his castle, which is made of ice and inhabited by a silent staff of servents. Only a grueling journey on the backs of the four winds will reveal the truth: the bear is really a prince who’s been enchanted by a troll queen, and the Lass must come up with a way to free him before he’s forced to marry a troll princess.
Snow, and fairytales, plus some romance. A much less urban scene than with Winterspell, but no less magical. The darkness here is toned down a bit, but still the trolls aren’t very nice.
Snowed Over, by Angie Stanton
To college student, Katie Brandt, ‘Home for the Holidays’ sounds like hell. When her parents separated, their holiday traditions shattered like a dropped ornament. What could be worse than celebrating Christmas with her suddenly single mom and mom’s new boyfriend?
Alex Walker, an engaged 20-year-old, dreads going home for his own reasons. He has a daunting task ahead of him and wishes he could skip the holidays altogether. So when a friend of a friend needs a ride north, Alex finds that having beautiful Katie seated by his side proves to be just the distraction he needs.
A simple ride home for Christmas turns into a nightmare when light snow rages into a full-scale blizzard. Katie and Alex find themselves stranded, and a vacant cabin becomes a haven from the storm.
Under different circumstances, time alone with Alex would be the ultimate Christmas gift, but Katie knows Alex is engaged and she must hide her growing attraction. However, Alex harbors a secret that just might change this holiday from the worst Christmas ever, to the best.
Confession: I didn’t read this book during Christmas, but I’m thinking about rereading it this week. :3 This is the only one in the list which actually has a christmas component. It’s your typical get snowed in with cute boy but it’s actually pretty good, don’t worry! Just let Stanton’s gift for writing sweet books win you over!
Everything, Everything, by Nicola Yoon
My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.
But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.
Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.
So, Everything, Everything might not have anything to do with winter, or Christmas, but it’s such an awesome book, you should definitely give it a chance to partake in the festivities wth you! It’s full of emotional moments, but at the end, it’ll leave you with lots of hope. Perfect to start the new year!
And there you have it! Give yourself the best gift ever and get to reading one of these books 🙂
